SWARCO Raiders host French champion in EFL quarterfinals

The battle for Europe’s crown begins. On Saturday, May 7 the SWARCO Raiders, marketing teammate of The Oakland Raiders, start into the 2011 European Football League (EFL) season. In the Eurobowl quarterfinals they host French champion Amiens Spartiates at Tivoli Stadium (kickoff at 7:45 p.m. CET).

Enjoy the SWARCO Raiders games on www.raiderstv.at. The live-stream starts on May 7, at 7:30 p.m. CET. For the very first time a SWARCO Raiders game will be shown in English.

The SWARCO Raiders have a 4-1 record in the Austrian Football League (AFL). Just last weekend they defeated reigning Austrian champion Danube Dragons 28-0 in a rematch of last season’s Austrian Bowl. They also beat the Kärnten Black Lions 48-0 and won on the road twice, winning 34-20 at Graz and 38-7 at Prague. The team’s only loss came three weeks ago in a close 24-28 defeat at Vienna.

„The Spartans have won their last four league games and come to Innsbruck with a lot of confidence“, said SWARCO Raiders head coach Shuan Fatah. “We expect it to be a tough matchup against a very athletic and speedy team”.

The Spartiates post a 5-3 record in the French league. After a victory on opening weekend, they lost three straight before winning the last four games in a row. They also played well in the EFL qualifying round. The French champion dominated both games against the Badalona Dracs, winning 62-12 at home and 60-8 on the road.

It’s the first time in six years that Amiens participates in an European competition. In 2005 they lost both games to the Bergamo Lions in the qualifying stage. A close 34-38 home loss was followed by a 6-35 defeat on the road.

It’s the first meeting between Amiens and the SWARCO Raiders. The last time, the Tyroleans played against a team from the Grande Nation they beat Flash de La Courneuve 30-19 in the 2009 Eurobowl final.
