Finish President Roope Noronen re-elected
SAJL - FINLAND
American Football Association of Finland (SAJL) held its annual general
assembly this weekend at Kouvola, Finland. General Assembly elected ROOPE
NORONEN (Helsinki) to continue as a president in 2005. Noronen has been federation president since 2001 and is also vice-president for European Federation of American Football (EFAF).
Vicepresident Mr PERTTU HAUTALA (Helsinki) was elected for another two-year
term. Mr ESA HAAVISTO (Turku) continues as another vice-president. New
boardmembers Mr ARI HAVULEHTO (Seinäjoki) and Ms MARJAANA SALOMAA Helsinki)
will join the board with Mr VESA METSO (Nurmijärvi) and Mr MIKKO RIILA
(Helsinki). Former boardmembers Mr JUUSO MARNO (Helsinki) and Ms JASMIN NIEMINEN (Helsinki) continue as deputy members in the board.
In it's general assembly SAJL also introduced its new executive director Mr
MATTI SORSA, who will start his duties at the start of 2005. Sorsa joins
SAJL from Suomen Kuntourheiluliitto (Finnish health and fitness sports
federation) where he worked as a organization director. Sorsa has been
involved with football in 80's and 90's and was SAJL's director of youth development in early 90's.
American football continues its steady growth in Finland. In 2004 team and
player numbers continued to increase and with full-time employed executive
director and director of youth developement (Mr HEIKKI HALTTUNEN) the rise
is expected to continue. In addition to the increase in club level activities the SAJL school project with NFL has put flag football sets to over 150 schools around Finland, which according to teachers allow over 30,000 boys and girls to play the game.
