TEAM HISTORY

The Amsterdam Crusaders are together with the Rotterdam Trojans the oldest American Football team in Holland. They are glad to be able to look back on a great history since their first game.

The Amsterdam Crusaders were founded in 1984 by several members of the now-defunct Amsterdam Rams. The team, nicknamed the "Cru", developed very quickly. One year later a second team was established, and in 1986 the Cru had their own accommodation. Today, the Amsterdam Crusaders are the largest, most successful and best known amateur American Football team in the Netherlands.

Just 3 years after their first game, they were able to win the Dutch National Championship. It promised to be a good start for a lot of championships. This resulted in 4 championships in a row and a series of finals in the Eurobowl, which they won in 1991 and 1992.

When they FLE was founded in 1994 the Amsterdam Crusaders was 1 of the top teams selected.

The Cru have compiled an impressive list of accomplishments in their 25 years of existence. They have been Dutch National Champions for many years in a row, and Euro Bowl finalists five times, dating back to 1988. In 1990 the Crusaders lost a qualification game against the eventual European Champions. In 1991 the Crusaders finally won the European Championship defeating the Berlin Adler in a 21-20 thriller in Offenbach, Germany. The Crusaders repeated as Euro Bowl Champions in 1992, beating Giaguiri Torino (I) by a 42-12 count. The Crusaders made an unprecedented third straight appearance in the final in ‘93 but were turned back by the London Olympians.

In 1994 and 1995, Amsterdam competed in the Football League Europe (FLE), making the play-offs both times. In 1996, the Cru returned to Dutch soil, winning the championship in the second division. After returning to the first division in 1997, the Cru picked up where they left off, winning the national title (Tulip Bowl) in 1998 and 1999.

The 2000 season marked a new millennium and a new beginning for the Dutch. After losing several key players to retirement, new head coach Marcus Muler spearheaded a rebuilding program that began to pay dividends in 2001. Muler, a former Amsterdam Admirals coach and general manager, joined forces with chairman John Mahnen, to lead their club to four consecutive national championships from 2001 to 2006. In 2008, the Crusaders again reached the national championship game and managed to revenge their loss a year earlier to the Maastricht Wildcats, beating them in the Tulip Bowl held in Arnhem.

Entering the 2009 season, the Cru, led by quarterback Claudio Bartollozzi and a deep array of running backs were able to beat the Farnham Knight and Olso Vikings and were stopped in the semi final of the EFLcup against the future champion Prague Panthers.
In 2010 the Cru played against the Cougars from St Quen l´Aumone and the London Blitz but did not get through to the semi final. In 2011 the Cru played London again in Great Britain and received the Firebats from Spain in Amsterdam.
The years 2012/2015 consisted of rebuilding the team under the new head coach Winston Ronde.
This ended in participating in EFL again in 2015, against Allgau Comets and Badalona Dracs, and winning the Tulipbowl .

Now in 2016, after 30 years, we are leaving our Cru-Home for a new accomodation at Sportpark Sloten.
There we will be looking forward of playing EFL again this year .
